This is a piece of good news. From El Diario de Xalapa, but taking place in Mexico City. (My rough translation)
More Than Five Hundred Square Meters of Murals To Be Restored
By Arlette Gutiérrez / El Sol de México
Ciudad de México.- El GDF and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA) yesterday began the process of restoring more than 500 square meters of murals which were painted between 1934 and 1936 and which are found on the ceilings and walls of the Mercado Abelardo L. Rodrígues and the State Theater on the eastern side of the Centro Histórico.
It will cost 2,400,000 pesos and the work will be done by specialists who will take more than 23 months to finish the job.
For more than 74 years these murals with themes from the Revolucion and social and progressive subject matter meant to celebrate the Mexican people, were created by the great artists of Mexican painting such as Pablo O'Higgins, and coordinated by Diego Rivera, have never been restored.
The Secrety of Culture for DF, Elena Cepeda, emphasized that this effort has tremendous value for the preservation of the patrimony since it will return dignity to the area and revitalize it as a cultural and commercial area.
Teresa Franco, director of INBA, added that this restoration is "something extraordinary" since it seeks to rescue great works of Mexican art and it is due to the coordinated efforts of the market merchants, the delegation Cuauhtémoc, the authorities of the Centro Histórico and the Secretary of Culture of DF.
Below is a photo stolen from El Diario de Xalapa which shows a section of the area to be restored.
