Yesterday our neighbor, John Calypso, told us that his friend Vicente said the bridge was open! Yeah, right, I said, remembering the various estimates ranging from the end of October to the end of December. But we thought we'd check it out on our way to Xalapa to get stuff for my birthday party last night. The first clue that it was open came when we realized that there was no traffic on the road that had been packed with detour traffic. The second clue was the bridge itself, hole gone, shiny new red railing on one side, concrete railing on the other. It actually seems a bit wider, but no one but no one was driving near the edge that had collapsed. It seems that it is definitely the intention to make it a two lane bridge, but that, as our neighbor Ismael said, parts will be brought pre-fab and that this new version of the bridge will be put together in a couple of months.
I'll post a picture or two soon.
